Hello to Everyone! March 2009

Our new camp phone number effective May 8, 2009 will be 1-647-478-2904 and we will have wireless internet that can be used right at your cabins. Please call this number when you are finished in Red Lake or Balmertown to let us know that you are on your way so that we may be promptly pick you up at the landing. Until that time you may still call our home number at
1-807-727-2028 for information.

You will have to get your licenses prior to coming to camp and new this year is that Non-Canadian residents need an Outdoors Card to fish in Ontario if they are 18 years of age and ver. The sportfishing licence tag (one year or eight day) or the conservation fishing licence tag (one year or eight day) accompanies the plastic Outdoors Card.
If you have never had an Outdoors Card, you can purchase a "Non-Canadian Resident Temporary Fishing Outdoors Card and Application" from one of more than 1,800 licence issuers across the province. The Non-Canadian Resident Temporary Fishing Outdoors Card and Application does not include the fishing licence tag. The fishing licence tag will be a separate paper permit.

The temporary Outdoors Card and paper licence are effective immediately. The plastic Outdoors Card will be mailed to you by year end, and is valid for three calendar years (including the year of purchase). Non-Canadian resident hunters can also fish under the authority of their Outdoor Card (fishing/hunting version) with the appropriate fishing licence tag.

We have been busy up at camp and when you get in you will notice the new bed frames and mattresses, sheets, pillows and blankets. Cabins 1, 2 and 3 will have insulation in the roof to cut down on heat loss in the spring and fall and keep them cooler in the summer. The former Friends and Family cabin is undergoing renovations to bring it up to another Deluxe cabin and will be rented out periodically this summer and ready to go full out next season.

Also new this summer, U.S. citizens must have a U.S. passport to re-enter the United States. Paperwork does take time so it you don’t already have one now may be the time to look into requirements. Children traveling with one parent, grandparents or other guardians should carry proof of custody or letters from the non-accompanying parent/s authorizing travel. (This is in addition to proof of the child's citizenship.) Any person under the age of 18 and traveling alone should carry a letter from his/her parent or guardian authorizing the trip. Travelers without such documentation may experience delays.

If there are any concerns about border crossing issues due to convictions you may wish to contact Lucy Perillo of Canadian Border Crossing Services for a free consultation at 1-800-438-7020 or http://www.bordercrossing.ca/. So far the US exchange is still good which means your American dollar will go farther in Canada and the price of gas is still lower that last year.

EJ and Lennon will be returning to work at the camp this summer along with a carpenter who we will keep extremely busy!

The airplane is getting a complete over haul from the bottom up – it should be ready some time in June. This is what it currently looks like, hard to believe isn’t it?

We still have several bear hunting openings available so if this something that you would be interested in please let us know. Also, fishing bookings are changing periodically so there may be spots available now that previously had been taken. Give us a call to see what would work for you. There will be a large assortment of souvenir t-shirts, sweatshirts, ball caps, watch caps and jackets to choose from.

We have had the web site updated and modernized. Please feel free to browse the helpful information links that we have added. http://www.nungesserlake.com/

It won’t be long now . . . . . . . Your adventure awaits!
Yours in fishing,

Doug & Cathy

End of 2008 Season

During our first season it was good to see and meet so many people who have come back year after year, your input and insight is greatly appreciated. Your pictures are truly amazing to look through to see how much the camp has changed over the years. Thank you to all of you who have relayed positive comments and helpful suggestions (I am not sure we can swing the massage therapist though) along the way. To everyone who brought things to camp and left them behind for others to use, we give a really big thanks to as well.

We found ourselves watching the weather this year closer than the average farmer and it always seemed to give us what we didn’t want. It was not a typical year at all as ice out was terribly late and so was everything else after that. Spawning, May fly hatch, warm weather all came later than normal. We had several hail storms on July 1 and weeks where you could have on your winter parka on one day and shorts the next. Then of course it was warm with a full moon for our fist week of bear hunters. They each got a bear though. Eleven of our bear hunters got a shot at an animal. Two passed up hoping for a different animal. We had
some good sized bears with the biggest bear well over 400 pounds. The price of the Fall Bear Hunt has increased, the amount will be posted on the web site shortly.

The Fishing packages prices will not have an increase. We will still include boat, motor, gas, life jackets and all of that but actually take away the “take home fish fee”. We had a lot of negative feedback about this and decided it was better if left off (right Denny?) Fishing was great even during the rainy weather (our lake level went up over 10 inches this year before going back down). The biggest Northern was a 50 incher caught in South Bay using an 8 inch Depth Raider lure. The Biggest Walleye was 30.5 inches but no photo was taken so we will just have to imagine. First cast out on the first day – it doesn’t get any better than that!

Plenty of good size fish and lots for shore lunch, many camera moments too during the season.

We will be continuing our clean up and improvements that we had begun this year as well as a new phone system. This will probably mean a new phone number and as soon as we know it we will be passing it on to everyone.

Before they left the guys made timbers with which to jack up and fix the fish cleaning house and the dock at the lake. We got a massive amount of lumber from Cathy’s dad’s saw mill to fix and make our river landing safer. Once those two priorities have been accomplished we will continue on with other improvements. Perhaps even side the house and see who wins the bet this year!
New bed frames are going to be built over the winter and brought out to camp along with new mattresses. We are making every effort for the wireless internet which we had little success with this year to be working for opening week of 2009, to some it will be a blessing, others a curse. Several of the fridges, microwaves, furnaces, showers or tub surrounds will be replaced or fixed as well. Better outdoor lighting, more kitchen ware, recycle bins will be put out.
If you have not already done so, please verify your dates with us prior to the end of the year.

The regular $200 for fishing and $500 for bear hunting deposit is still required. We will be attending the All Canada Sport Show in Chicago on January 8 to 11/09 as well as one in Minneapolis and we don’t want to accidently book out your spot. Please let us know if you would be interested in having the camp open past the September 11/09 closing date. If we get enough interest we would be staying open an extra week or two. If you know of anyone else that would like to get this newsletter or would like to be contacted please let us know.

Our information tells us that you may need a passport to come into Canada for the summer of 2009 even while driving, when exactly this starts it does not say. Also if divorced and travelling with children it would be helpful to look into some information as to what is required of you in order to take them across. Both issues would be greatly worthwhile to look into a long time prior to your trip.

We are looking forward to speaking with you or e-mailing and talking with you at the sports show. Have a great winter and stay healthy and happy.

Doug & Cathy
